Hang Seng bank just sent me the second answer to my email, the first one being “We have read your email! Thank you for your support!”

Here it is: “Thank you for your email of 2 May 2012 regarding the captioned matter. We are now looking into the matter and will reply to you as soon as possible.

Please feel free to contact our Ms Yip on 2997 3363 in case of need.”

May 2nd was of course the day i incredulously answered the “thank you for your support” email. My bet is: They are NOT looking into the matter. But I will rid this town of ugly crippled characters yet.

Even better: shrink everything down to A5 (half a standard sheet – only recently found out not everyone in the world calls a standard sheet A4 – what?!). Buy an A5 binder while you’re at the newsagent. Then, ALL your course materials fit neatly in your handbag and there’s no excuse to not have them on you at all times.

I did this recently and although it cost $200 in initial photocopying charges, because I had a year’s worth of notes, it’s absolutely expedited my Cantonese progress. So many more small-bag-carrying studying opportunities!

To be fair Cecilie, that poem is technically written in another language than either Mandarin or Cantonese. I’ve seen people use this example before, but it doesn’t make sense. Classical Chinese is completely different. Mandarin and Cantonese could both be written in an alphabetic system with no problems in comprehension, although I don’t think they should for cultural reasons.
